Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is a fertility consultation and why is it important?
A fertility consultation is your first step in meeting with a fertility specialist to discuss your reproductive health, goals, and concerns. During this appointment, the doctor reviews your medical history, family-building timeline, and any previous tests or treatments to help determine the most appropriate next steps for your fertility care.
2. What happens during a fertility consultation?
At your consultation, the specialist typically reviews both partners’ medical histories, asks about your fertility journey so far, discusses lifestyle and health factors, and may recommend initial diagnostic tests like hormone panels, ultrasound, or semen analysis. This helps the team assess your fertility status and start planning your personalized care.
3. How should I prepare for my fertility consultation?
Preparing for your consultation can include gathering relevant medical records, noting your fertility timeline, making a list of questions, and being ready to discuss health factors and past treatments. Bringing a support person with you can also help you remember important information discussed.
4. Will I need tests during my initial fertility consultation?
It depends on your history and previous evaluations. Your provider may recommend tests like blood work, ultrasounds, hormone levels, or semen analysis to better understand your fertility potential and help tailor a treatment plan. Some tests may be done on the same day or scheduled afterward.
5. What questions should I ask during my fertility consultation?
Consider asking about the recommended next steps, what fertility treatments are available, how success rates vary by age or condition, lifestyle changes that may help, and whether insurance or financing options are available. Preparing these questions in advance ensures you make the most of your appointment.
